Ancient pantomime, one of the greatest attractions on the ancient stage from the end of the first century BC until the end of the sixth century AD, was a lavish and highly skilled performance in which gestures, bodily movements, words, songs, and music contributed to stir the emotions of the audience. Roman pantomime was a production, usually based upon myth or legend, for a solo male dancer—clad in a long silk tunic and a short mantle (pallium) that was often used as a "prop" —accompanied by a sung libretto (called the fabula saltica or "dance-story") rendered by a singer or chorus (though Lucian states that originally the pantomime himself was the singer). Pantomime, the most popular art-form of Roman theatre under the empire, in which a solo dancer (pantomimus, παντόμιμος ‎‎) represented mythological themes without voice, supported by instrumental music and a chorus. Roman actors developed the art of pantomime or acting without words. They also used dance, music, elaborate gestures, sets, and costumes to get across the meaning. As theatre developed, they sometimes had elaborate sets.
